"If you have not watched anything else about the Truth and Reconciliation report, this shows both views.....please take some time....this is not just an Indigenous issue.
Ask yourself what the non-Indigenous population has been injected with in regards to stereotypes and education surrounding Canada's Indigenous people over all the years of the residential school system and beyond. We need to UNLEARN what has been taught for so many years. Because we believe it so deeply when we look into society that is all we see. Because that is all we want to see. Would we be willing to listen, willing to reconcile, willing to help heal if we understood that this was a GENOCIDE?
What is stopping us from using the term "CULTURAL GENOCIDE"
"The International Convention of the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide on December 9, 1948 set the United Nations definition of genocide:
General Assembly Resolution 260A (III) Article 2
In the present Convention, genocide means any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group, as such:
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group"
